Beautiful Furniture, Thoughtfully Designed

ABC Intro- Dakota

While the rest of the industry builds big walls around their booths to keep away prying eyes, we take the opposite approach. Those guys are going to copy us either way. We're more interested in customer feedback than trying to keep things top secret.

Dakota is the first of the new intros we've brought to the ABC show this year. This one is exclusive to members of the National Independent Nursery Furniture Retailers' Association (NINFRA). Dakota has a couple of notable features. First is the intro of new "Euro size" cases- we've tried to scale the combo and chest down a bit so they fit into smaller spaces.

Also new is the hutch for the combo- we include an extra base that can be screwed to the bottom of the hutch to convert it into a bookcase later. This neatly solves the "what do we do with the hutch after the baby gets a bit older" problem. Response to this piece has been very strong. We think this is the first time this has been done, and we are working on patenting it.

I'll publish some more new stuff over the next couple days here.

[This is the Chocolate Mist finish, which for some reason is really difficult to photograph under the terrible lighting in here.]

When will the Dakota be available? I just saw the Stratton and loved it in person, but this one looks great as well.

Thanks!

Dakota should be available in January or February of 2009.

What finish options will be available for the Dakota line? Can you give hints as to whether the line will be priced similar to Jonesport? Or more like Stratton?

Hi Martha-

Pricing will be lower, like Jonesport. Initially the only color will be Chocolate Mist (as shown here).

Thanks,
Scott

Is this something I could go ahead and place my order for now? I know it will not be available until January 09 but how long will it take to get it if I could get an order in early?

That would depend on your retailer- if they are planning on carrying it, they might take an order from you. As of right now, it is scheduled to be produced in mid January, and would arrive here about 6 weeks after production. I don't want to portray those as firm dates- there is some chance those could move a bit. There are a lot of variables outside our control.

I love the look of the Dakota crib, although you don't really have great pics of the dressers. You mentioned that the dressers were made smaller for this collection. I like the size (adult size) of the Stratton dressers. Will the Dakota crib match well with the stratton dressers? Do you have better pics and dimensions for the Dakota Dressers?
Thank you,
Joy

Hi Joy-

We're still waiting on the studio photography, at which point we'll put up a real product page. Dakota & Stratton (as well as Brookline) are all available in the Chocolate Mist finish, so they are all interchangeable in terms of color.

The Dakota cases aren't that much smaller. The chest is 4 drawers instead of 5, and the combo is the same as our normal combos (not Stratton, which is huge), just with the door removed. The Dakota chest is 38"w x 46"h x 20"d. The combo is 42"w x 34"h x 20"d.

Thanks,
Scott

When you say ETA is late March- Is that for consumers to get from a location if they have in-stock or only for floor models to be able to be seen at the dealer? I really love the look of the Dakota and we are contemplating putting off our crib purchase to see the Dakota, but not sure if we'd have enough time to get one if we ordered it late March early April (due in early June). We would be purchasing from USA Baby in MN....

Hi Hollie-

That would be when the first batch of production arrives, so there would be stock in our warehouse at that time. I don't think your due date would be a problem- that still leaves quite a bit of time if something should get held up.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the info. You say the Dakota and Stratton will match in terms of color. In terms of style do you think the Dakota crib will go nicely with the Stratton Dressers? I really like the size of the dressers. Is it the Pacific, I think are going to be large as well, but I am due May 28th so that collection will be coming out to late for me.
Thanks,
Joy

Hi Joy-

If you send me an email I can send you a rendering showing the two together (might take me a couple days). (sbennett at westwoodbaby.com) The Pacific cases would be the smaller size (we changed them), and they really wouldn't go together anyway.

Hi Scott,
I'm sorry, I meant the brookline not the pacific. But I think that collection will be to late for me anyway. I will send you an e-mail.
Thank you so much.

I really like the Dakota, but wondering about the comment in the blog about only available to members of NINFRA. We purchased our last westwood crib at Buy Buy Baby who is not a member of NINFRA does this mean they will not be able to get this?? There are retailers around who are members of NINFRA but do not carry Westwood furniture. Any other way for me to order one?

Yeah, unfortunately if it's not being carried by someone close to you, you would probably have to find a store to ship it.

I am wondering if the Dakota has shipped out to stores yet?

No, not yet.

Latest word from the factory (as of last night) has pushed the arrival date a couple weeks out. We are now looking at mid April.

I have called many stores in the surrounding states and nobody seems to know anything about the Dakota. Everyone is saying that they don't carry it, even the NINFRA stores. I live in the Detroit metro area of Michigan and am willing to drive or have it shipped. Can you please locate a couple of stores that plan to carry the Dakota.

Oh, and will the Brookline have the Antique-looking handles still? Thanks, Scott

I believe you can order it, but I'm not the person to ask. And Brookline now has the same metal knobs as Stratton. I just got the disc with the product photography on it, so I'll try to get that up tomorrow.

And Anon 2/26- I missed your comment somehow. I'll try to find out who near you is carrying it.
