Beautiful Furniture, Thoughtfully Designed

New Group: Stratton

We're headed to the ABC show in Las Vegas next week, where we will have a huge amount of new product. Normally these things are shrouded in secrecy, but we thought it would be a nice change to show you what we've got coming. Not all of it will end up in production, so if there's something you like, tell us!

First up is the new Stratton collection. This one will go into production, and will be available in stores starting in November. Stratton is scaled very big (this is hard to show in photos, but it's big) with a rich, elegant finish. We like this one, and we think it's going to be a big hit.

Thanks Holly. This group is coming in early November, but in limited quantities. More will be available in early 2008.

the furniture looks good but you should not be producing new furniture until you can get produced what people have already paid for in other lines such as Asheville

Anonymous- it's hard to give you specific help from an anonymous comment on a blog, but I checked current inventory for Asheville. We are in stock on everything but combos and bed rails, and those items are due to arrive in a week. If you give us a call or send an email we can be much more helpful. Thanks for your comment and purchase.

I just saw the Stratton collection in stores and fell in love. Are there any additional pieces, such as an amoire and nightstand, or will the three pieces currently out be it?

Hi Lori-

I just added Stratton details to the main portion of the site. There are no plans to add an armoire or nightstand to the group (armoires have become very unpopular in the last couple years). The Stratton cases are a lot bigger than our other groups though, so there should be quite a bit of storage space even without the armoire.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi,
I really like the design of this crib. It is very beautiful. My husband and I are expecting our first child and i'm trying to find out as much as possible about the safety rating on various cribs. Is there any information on this model? Or other "westwood" designs?
Thanks,
Monica

Hi Monica-

Thanks for the message. Generally speaking, there isn't much safety information available for specific cribs unless there has been a problem (like a recall) with a particular model. Nobody really does Consumer Reports style testing on cribs to attempt to measure safety. The only thing that comes close is the JPMA certification process, which tests cribs to a higher set of standards than the government-mandated minimums. However, those standards came about in an era of really thin and flimsy dropside cribs that couldn't take any abuse. The big convertible fixed side cribs that have become popular in recent years typically vastly exceed those strength standards.

All our cribs are JPMA certified, and Westwood has an "A" rating in the Baby Bargains book. We also do additional testing to be sure our finish materials are lead-free, and we try to design our products to avoid potential problems altogether (for instance, we don't build any dropside cribs). All the owners of the company are very directly involved in the design, development, and quality control process for our products, and we think it shows in the product. If I can answer any more questions, please feel free to contact me via email: sbennett (at) westwoodbaby.com.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

My husband and I just saw the Stratton at the baby store and loved it. My husband would like to know where your furniture is made.

Thanks,
Sue

Hi Sue-

All our furniture is made in a new factory in south Vietnam, just outside Saigon. I've got some pictures I'm going to put up soon.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,
I recently discovered your furniture company, and I love the pieces. I heard from a store in town that you have a new line coming out, "Jonesport". When will there be information/pictures on the website regarding this new line? Thanks!

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer-

Jonesport will be arriving in the latter half of April. I just put up a little post and picture here, and I'll be putting up a regular info page in a couple weeks.

My husband and I are intersted in the stratton collection. Do you have a picture of the stratton crib converted into a full size bed? On your website there is not an option to see it set up as a full size bed. Thank you.

We love the Stratton collection but really want a nightstand. This may be the deal breaker for us. Do you have plans for a Stratton nightstand. -Kelley

Thanks for the comments. #1: We didn't have the bed rails at the time we photographed Stratton, so we weren't able to photograph it as a bed. We may be sending it out for photography again since we don't have pictures in both colors. In the meantime, I could send you a pretty good rendering- send me an email at sbennett (at) westwoodbaby.com

Kelley- I'm happy to unbreak the deal for you. We actually just put nightstands into production a couple weeks ago, and they should be hitting the warehouses in the next few weeks, depending on which color you were looking at. And that reminds me I need to add it to the website.

Hi Scott,

We just had the Stratton collection delivered and it is beautiful!!! We love it! However, under the advice of my sister-in-law, we did not put the hutch on changing table. She said you put it on when you are no longer using the dresser as a changing table. The hutch is huge and is taking up a lot of space in the garage. I think that as long as I don't use the shelving I don't see the harm in putting up the hutch. Is there a safety factor that I am not considering?

Thank you!
Sue

Hi Sue-

The hutch is designed to be used from the start- that's why it has the lights. Obviously you need to take out the lower shelf to give you enough room to move around the changing pad, but you can leave the upper shelf in. It's a good spot for storage and having it in keeps the lights from shining directly on the combo top.

The only safety factors are addressed in the assembly instructions- first, there are a couple of metal tabs on the back of the hutch that screw into the back of the combo to keep it from moving around. Also attached to the back of the hutch in a bag is an anti-tip strap that you attach to a stud in your wall to help prevent the (remote) possibility of it tipping over.

Hope that helps. Thanks for your purchase, and I'm glad you like it! Scott

Hi All,

We ordered the Stratton Crib, night stand, and dresser back on March 1st. The reseller is stating it's now on back order until some time in June. Can you tell me if there is any truth to that?

I want this furniture!! But I'm being told mid July after already waiting 2 months ... almost 6 months seems a bit long. Can you tell us if this is going to change? Thanks.

Blogger Scott Bennett said...

Hi Mike & Anon-

It definitely won't be July. A big shipment is leaving the factory probably today (see post here). It takes about 4-6 weeks to cross the ocean and get out to stores. I hope that leaves you both with plenty of time to spare. We apologize for the delay, we do try to keep all product in stock, but Stratton demand has been very, very high.

Thanks,
Scott

Do NOT order this furniture unless you want extreme delays. I ordered mine at the very beginning of February, was promised it in late February and it is finally arriving in the United States today or tomorrow and I will not receive it until late May (if then!), a full three months after it was promised and painfully close to my due date. Since due dates of our children can't be moved, I would advise against it. I understand the product is popular, but they should not take orders they can't fill!

Hi Anonymous. First, let me personally apologize for the delay in receiving your furniture. I know it's frustrating when things don't arrive on schedule. It's actually frustrating for us too, believe it or not.

I would however, take exception with your advice for other people not to order it. Stratton is currently in stock, and now that we know just how popular it is, we can plan accordingly to keep it in stock.

Again, sincere apologies for the delay, and I hope the quality of the furniture leads you to eventually forget any problems you had in getting it.

Best Regards,
Scott Bennett

May I ask what type of wood the Stratton collection is made of?

Thanks.

The Stratton crib is made from solid poplar. The cases are poplar and cherry veneer.

Hi there,

My husband and I really love the Stratton collection, and I am not due until late November. That being said, we would love to order this set but I'm a little aprehensive about the delivery delays. If we order, we will be doing so from the Buy Buy Baby store in Downers Grove, Illinois. How long, if we placed the order this weekend, would it take to receive our order?

Thanks for your response!

Hi Lisa-

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I'm actually in Vietnam at the moment. There are some big Stratton shipments coming in around the end of July / beginning of August, so an order placed now would most likely be delivered by the end of August. To be safe, you should probably figure on sometime in September though. That's for the Virginia Cherry finish. I believe the Chocolate Mist finish is in stock. Hope that helps.

Thanks,
Scott

Hello-

I love the Stratton collection, but I live in Houston and the only 2 stores that carried the WestWood collection are no longer carrying it. Does this mean I am out of luck? Any ideas?

Thanks-

Hello, we were thinking about ordering your Stratton collection. If the order were placed tomorrow, what is your most accurate estimate of arrival? Our baby is due in December and would not want to wait several months as stated in prior comments above.

thanks.

8/29/2008 8:39 PM
Blogger Scott Bennett said...

It would depend in part on where you ordered it, as some warehouses have better stock levels than others. Also, some stores buy container loads, so they would carry stock themselves. You should certainly have it before December in any case.

Greetings, Your furniture is beautiful. Do the late shipments problems still exist with the Stratton collection? We would need to have it before the middle of March. Thanks.

Hi John-

I answered your question on the other post, but the short version is no, there are no major problems. Stratton stock levels and lead times are normal.

I love the overall look of your furniture. However, you seem to lose a lot of space with the "easy reach" drawers. Is there any way to convert these to normal drawers? Thanks!

1/26/2009 4:38 PM
Blogger Scott Bennett said...

Hi Jon-

You're right, the swingout drawers are about half the length of a normal drawer. With Stratton it's not a huge loss of space in terms of overall percentage, because those drawers are pretty shallow anyway, and the rest of the drawers are huge.

We did look at making them convertible to regular drawers, but it just wouldn't have worked. All our drawers are individually adjusted by hand at the factory, because of small differences in the drawer track mounting, the face frame, drawer box sizes, etc. If you don't do that, the drawers don't slide properly and they don't line up. On a case like this where the drawers are flush, they might not even close all the way. We didn't feel that was something we could reasonably expect an end user to do.

So there is a drawback, but we feel the convenience (and safety) of having changing supplies close at hand outweighs the loss of storage.

Thanks,
Scott
